Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
