A Prediction Market Participant Earned $436K on Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.
Market Movement in Wagers
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
One account, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
However these probabilities had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity just before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Political Attention Grows
Politicians are starting to take note.
A bill introduced on the start of the week would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Industry Context
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with users able to bet on everything from elections to politics.
Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
