A minimum of 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
